Chapter 13
Serena
Iâm in the middle of lathering myself up with body wash in my shower when I glance down at myself and, for a moment, the world stops spinning. Hot water cascades down my skin, steam gathered in the bathroom, and I have my playlist going on in the background. But I pay attention to none of it, because the entirety of my focus is suddenly on the way my stomach is protruding out of nowhere.
A bump. I have a baby bump.
Itâs small, but if I was wearing tight clothes or was naked as I am now, itâs noticeable. Itâs small enough that I can still hide it under hoodies and sweatshirts, but itâs there. A shaky breath escapes me, the corners of my mouth curling up into a smile of disbelief and awe. I can feel my heart fluttering, and I know itâs only a matter of time until Iâll start to feel kicks. I mean, sure, itâs going to be a while, but itâs inevitable. Seeing a bump begin to form, the first visible sign of my pregnancy, feels surreal. Like Iâm dreaming this.
I press my hand over it, and another trembling exhale rushes out of me. Itâs real.
And as soon as that fact sinks in, the next thought that comes to my mind is that I need to find Isaac and show himâin person. So, I quickly, and carefully, finish off the rest of my shower before hopping out and getting ready, drying my hair and changing into comfortable clothes. Once Iâm ready, I shoot Isaac a quick text.
Serena: Hey, where are you?
Isaac: Belleview Rink, teaching the kiddos.
With that information acquired, I head out of the house, shouting a hasty goodbye to Ashton, who is on the couch watching TV, before hopping into my car. Excitement and nerves rush through my veins as I drive to the local ice rink, thumbs tapping on the steering wheel in rhythm with the beat of the song playing through my car. I keep biting down on my lower lip, trying to stifle my smile, but itâs no use.
Even though Iâm just as scared right now as I was when I first found out about the pregnancy, the excitement and thrill of it all overtakes a lot of that fear. Iâm way too aware there is a lot Isaac and I still have to figure out, but I canât constantly keep worrying about that and miss out on the exhilaration of all of this. The idea of labor and giving birth terrifies me, as much as the idea of having another human being to take care of does as well, but right now, I can focus on the happiness of it all.
Weâre having a baby. A baby I am already very much in love with, if Iâm being honest.
When I arrive at Belleview Rink, I park my car and head inside, already hearing multiple voices echo around the rink as I walk through the hall before emerging into the main area.
